Visiting Uluru Without a Car: Passes, Pickups and Shuttles
What runs into the park, what stays at the resort, and a two-day plan that needs no rental.
Yes, you can see Uluru and Kata Tjuta without a car, and many visitors do. Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara sits about 20 minutes’ drive from the Rock, and three things close the gap: the Uluru & Kata Tjuta Hop On Hop Off Pass, guided tours that collect you from your hotel, and the resort’s free shuttle for getting between hotels and Town Square. What you will not find in Yulara are taxis or public buses, so every trip into the national park needs a seat on a pass, a tour or a hired car.

How the Hop On Hop Off pass works
The pass is the nearest thing to public transport inside the park. Air-conditioned buses run between the resort and the park from sunrise to sunset, and you can ride to Uluru as often as you like over one, two or three days, counted from your first trip. One-day and two-day passes include one return transfer to Kata Tjuta; the three-day pass includes two. Pickups are from Desert Gardens, Sails in the Desert, the Ayers Rock Resort Campground and the Outback Hotel & Lodge.
On GetYourGuide the pass is from $98 per person, rated 4.5 from 160 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. That is a US dollar price. Ayers Rock Resort sells the one-day pass in Australian dollars: A$140 per adult, A$70 for children aged 5 to 15, free for under-5s, and A$350 for a family of two adults and two children.
Two details catch people out. The pass does not include park entry, so adults need the A$38 three-day park pass (under-18s enter free), bought online from Parks Australia or at the entry station. And the operator asks you to pre-book pickup times and message your planned transfers for each day, for example Uluru sunrise and Kata Tjuta sunset on day one. Timetables change month to month; your hotel or the driver will have the current one. Our Hop On Hop Off pass review has the full breakdown, and the park entry fees page covers the pass and opening hours.
The pass suits travelers who want to walk on their own schedule: the 10.6 km base walk, the shorter Mala and Kuniya walks, the Cultural Centre, and sunrise or sunset at the viewing areas. Our self-guided base walk guide helps you time that day.
Tours that collect you from your hotel
Most of the tours on this site include pickup from Ayers Rock Resort hotels, which makes a tour the simplest car-free morning or evening. SEIT’s Uluru Highlights small-group morning tour covers sunrise, a picnic breakfast and the Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole in about three hours, from $132 per person. The Emu Run Uluru day tour with sunset BBQ adds two guided walks, the Cultural Centre and a BBQ dinner with sparkling wine, from $230. For the evening alone, the small-group sunset with sparkling wine is from $80. All three list the park pass as an extra.
For pickup windows and which tours suit which hotel, see Uluru tours from Yulara.
Getting around Yulara itself
The free resort shuttle links the hotels and the campground with Town Square. It stops at the resort boundary and does not go into the national park. If you want to cycle around Uluru, Outback Cycling hires bikes for a self-guided ride; during the Liru walk closure it has operated from the Mala car park instead.
Arriving and leaving without a car
Ayers Rock Airport is about 10 minutes from Yulara. Resort hotel guests on scheduled Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights ride a free coach that meets each arrival outside the terminal, with no booking needed. For the return, the coach leaves your hotel about two hours before your flight; reception confirms the time.
By road, Alice Springs is 465 km away, about 5.5 hours of driving. The AAT Kings coach transfer from Alice Springs is from $181 per person, rated 4.6 from 129 reviews, with driver commentary and a roadhouse stop. Our how to get to Uluru page compares flights, driving and coaches, and Uluru tours from Alice Springs covers day trips and packages that start there. If you do want a car after all, hire cars in Yulara are limited; book a few weeks ahead.
Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon without a car
Kata Tjuta is about 45 minutes from Yulara. Your Hop On Hop Off pass includes a return there, or a guided trip such as the Uluru sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day (from $130) combines both with a walk into Walpa Gorge. Our Kata Tjuta tours page compares the rest.
Kings Canyon is about three hours each way. The AAT Kings Kings Canyon day trip collects you from selected resort hotels, stops for a cooked breakfast at Kings Creek Station and gives you the Rim Walk or an easier creek-bed walk. It is from $241 per person, rated 4.7 from 669 reviews. The Watarrka park pass (A$10) is extra until 1 April 2027, when the listing says it becomes included. See Kings Canyon tours from Uluru.
A car-free two-day plan
This plan uses a two-day Hop On Hop Off pass for the independent parts and adds tours with hotel pickup for sunrise, the night sky and dinner.
| When | What | How |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1, dawn | Uluru sunrise, picnic breakfast, Kuniya walk | Small-group sunrise tour |
| Day 1, afternoon | Cultural Centre (open 7:00 am to 5:45 pm) | Hop On Hop Off bus |
| Day 1, sunset | Uluru at sunset | Hop On Hop Off bus |
| Day 1, night | Telescopes and a photo under the stars | Uluru astronomy tour |
| Day 2, dawn | Kata Tjuta at sunrise, then Walpa Gorge or Karu Lookout | Hop On Hop Off Kata Tjuta return |
| Day 2, midday | Rest at the resort or browse Town Square | Free resort shuttle |
| Day 2, evening | Dinner under the stars | See dinner tours |
From October to March the park advises finishing walks before 11 am, so keep the walking in the early slots. Walk sections can also close at short notice; check uluru.gov.au/news before you set out. For three days or more, see our Uluru itinerary.
When you know your dates, check availability for the Hop On Hop Off pass.

What Hop On Hop Off Riders Say
Ratings and review counts are each platform's live figures (GetYourGuide or Viator) as of October 2026 and may shift slightly day to day.
"Mark the driver was awesome, friendly and very knowledgeable"
"Can’t fault the UHOHO service. The driver (Sonya, I think) was very pleasant and helpful; the buses were clean and comfortable and the buses arrived and left on time. Highly recommended."
"Everything was extremely well organised and perfectly on time. The staff paid great attention to passengers and provided lots of useful information throughout the trip. It’s a fantastic way to visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta, with the opportunity to experience both sunrise and sunset. I would definitely recommend it! All the drivers were super friendly and helpful."
"If you are not able or willing to drive, this is almost the only option. Otherwise you will need to join an organized tour to get into the national park, which will be much more expensive."
"Excellent, we were happy we decided to do The Hop on Hop off. The drivers were very helpful and gave us lots of information and were very obliging. It’s a great way to visit Uluru!"
"Really recommend! Made everything very easy to navigate and the drivers are all very caring, making sure you know each route, the bus times, and have plenty of water. The sunrise times are great as well, we did sunrise for both locations and would do it again. The sunrise options take you to the sunrise viewing platforms and after that they take you to the actual walking routes so it feels like a 2 in 1 with your ticket. Just remember it is a hop on hop off bus, not a tour. If you don’t get to the bus at the time stated / that you want, you have to wait for the next one."
"Sonja, our Guide and Bus driver was very friendly and competent."

Uluru Without a Car: Questions
Buses, shuttles, airport coaches and tours with pickup, answered from the listings and the park's own guidance.
Yes. The Hop On Hop Off pass runs between Ayers Rock Resort, Uluru and Kata Tjuta from sunrise to sunset, and most guided tours collect you from your resort hotel. Arriving is easy too: resort hotel guests get a free coach from Ayers Rock Airport. You only need a car if you want to come and go at any hour. See the car-free options compared.
Inside the national park you have two choices: a Hop On Hop Off pass for one, two or three days, or guided tours with hotel pickup. Within Yulara, the free resort shuttle links the hotels and the campground with Town Square. Many visitors mix them, using the pass for walks and sunsets and booking tours for sunrise, dinners and flights. Our Uluru itinerary shows how to sequence them.
There is no public bus. The scheduled service is Uluru Hop On Hop Off, a private operator whose air-conditioned buses pick up at Desert Gardens, Sails in the Desert, the Ayers Rock Resort Campground and the Outback Hotel & Lodge. Timetables change each month and pickup times must be pre-booked. The drive to Uluru takes about 20 minutes.
On GetYourGuide it is from $98 per person in US dollars, rated 4.5 from 160 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Ayers Rock Resort lists the one-day pass in Australian dollars at A$140 per adult, A$70 for children aged 5 to 15 and A$350 for a family of four, with under-5s free. Park entry is not included. Our pass review has the detail.
No. The free Ayers Rock Resort shuttle only links the hotels and the campground with Town Square. It does not enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. To reach the Rock without a car, use the Hop On Hop Off pass or a tour that includes hotel pickup, and remember that adults still need the A$38 park pass, while under-18s enter free.
No. The park states there are no taxis or other public transport in Yulara, so you cannot hail a ride to the Rock or the airport. Plan your transport before you arrive: the free airport coach for resort hotel guests, the free resort shuttle around Yulara, and the Hop On Hop Off pass or tours with pickup for trips into the park.
Yes, cars can be hired at Ayers Rock Airport, in Yulara or in Alice Springs, but the park warns that rental cars in Yulara are limited, so book a few weeks ahead. All roads inside the park are sealed and a 2WD is fine. If the cars are gone, the Hop On Hop Off pass and tours with pickup cover the main sights. Compare routes on how to get to Uluru.
Kata Tjuta is about 45 minutes from Yulara. One-day and two-day Hop On Hop Off passes include one return transfer there and the three-day pass includes two, with morning and afternoon options. Guided tours also go, such as the sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day from $130 per person, which includes a walk into Walpa Gorge. See our Kata Tjuta tours page.
Take a day tour. The AAT Kings Kings Canyon day trip collects you from selected resort hotels, stops for a cooked breakfast at Kings Creek Station and gives you the Rim Walk or an easier option. It is from $241 per person, rated 4.7. The A$10 Watarrka park pass is extra until 1 April 2027. Compare the others on Kings Canyon tours from Uluru.
If you are staying in an Ayers Rock Resort hotel and arrive on a scheduled Qantas, Jetstar or Virgin Australia flight, a free coach meets the flight outside the terminal; no booking is needed. The airport is about 10 minutes from Yulara. For your departure, the coach leaves your hotel about two hours before the flight, and reception confirms the time.
Yes. Outback Cycling hires bikes for a self-guided ride around Uluru. It normally uses the Liru walk from the Cultural Centre, and while that walk has been closed after flooding it has operated from the Mala car park. You still need a way to reach the park and a park pass. Check uluru.gov.au/news for current track closures before you go.
The cheapest car-free setup is a Hop On Hop Off pass plus the free activities in the park: the Cultural Centre, the free ranger-guided Mala walk, the Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole and the sunrise and sunset viewing areas. Adults pay the A$38 park pass and under-18s enter free. Our things to do in Uluru page lists the free options.
