"Fantastic experience and well worth the experience. The segway route allowed us to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. Our young teens girls loved it too"

Uluru Segway Tours: Quarter Base or Full Base?
The three Segway tours, who can ride, and what to know before you book.
For a first Segway ride at Uluru, book the Best of Uluru Segway and walking tour, from $153 per person and rated 4.8 from 294 reviews. You ride roughly a quarter of the base, the section the operator calls the most scenic, then walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole and the caves of the Mala walk with a guide. If you want to ride the whole way round, the full base tour at sunrise covers it, and a self-drive version runs in the summer months.
All three tours are run by Uluru Segway Tours, a park-listed operator that gives 2.5% of each tour to the local community through the Central Lands Trust.
Which Segway tour to book
| Tour | Base covered by Segway | Also included | Time | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best of Uluru Segway + walk | About a quarter | Mutitjulu Waterhole walk, Mala walk and Kantju Gorge | 4 to 5 hours | $153 per person | 4.8 (294 reviews) |
| Full base Segway at sunrise | The full base | Sunrise picnic, Mutitjulu Waterhole walk | About 5 hours | $181 per person | 4.9 (446 reviews) |
| Self-drive full base Segway | The full base | Segway training and safety gear only | About 2.5 hours | $148 per person | 4.8 (65 reviews) |
The Best of Uluru tour suits most riders. The one-hour ride is short enough for a beginner, and the two walks take you to places you cannot ride: the waterhole and the caves along the Mala walk. The full base Segway tour at sunrise starts with sunrise and a picnic stop (light breakfast if you pick that option), then gives you about 2.5 hours in the saddle all the way round the rock, the full circuit that takes about 3.5 hours on foot. It suits confident riders who want the whole base without the 10.6 km walk.
The self-drive Segway tour is for travelers with a hire car. You drive yourself to the Kuniya car park, about 30 minutes from the resort, and meet the guide for training and a full base ride; hotel transfers and the park pass are not included, and the group is capped at 10. Its listing shows dates only from November to March. Prices on this page are in US dollars as the platforms show them; the Best of Uluru tour is also sold on Viator from $163, and the full base tour from $191.
Who can ride
The three listings set broadly the same rules:
| Rule | What the listings say |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 12; children must ride with an adult |
| Upper age | Not recommended over 65 |
| Weight | 45 to 117 kg (99 to 257 lb) |
| Fitness | Fit enough to ride a bicycle, with good balance and vision |
| Not suitable for | Pregnancy, back or spinal problems, poor cardiovascular health, recent surgery, wheelchair users |
| Shoes | Closed-toe shoes; anyone in flip-flops cannot ride |
| Paperwork | A waiver, as it is an adventure activity |
You do not need any Segway experience. Every tour starts with training and a practice ride; on the Best of Uluru tour that is 30 minutes before the one-hour ride. The listings describe Segway riding as an adventure activity and not a mobility aid, so if walking is difficult for you, a coach-based Uluru sunset tour or sunrise tour is the easier choice.
What you see and hear
The tours keep to the paths around the base, with guides talking about Anangu culture, plants and animals, geology and the European history of the area. Uluru is sacred to Anangu, the Traditional Owners, and some places along the base are sensitive sites where photography is prohibited; signs mark them, so keep an eye out as you ride. Guides speak English, and the operator offers a free GPS audio guide in six languages.

Bring sunglasses, a sun hat, water and closed-toe shoes. In summer, from October to March, the park advises finishing walks before 11 am, so a morning tour is the comfortable choice. Parts of the base walk can close at short notice for repairs or cultural reasons; check uluru.gov.au/news before you go. Our park pass guide explains how to buy the pass online.
Segway, bike or on foot?
If you would like to see the base under your own power, the Uluru base walk guide covers the 10.6 km self-guided loop, and the Outback Cycling bike hire offers a self-guided ride around the rock. For a guided walk instead of wheels, see our Uluru base walk tours, including the full base walk at sunrise. Without a car, every Segway option except the self-drive tour includes hotel pickup; Uluru without a car explains the rest.

Uluru Segway Tours: Questions
Prices, time on the Segway, who can ride and how the tours compare with walking.
On GetYourGuide, the Best of Uluru Segway and walking tour is from $153 per person and the full base Segway tour at sunrise from $181. The self-drive full base tour on Viator is from $148, without hotel transfers. These are US dollar prices, and none includes the A$38 adult park pass. See the Segway tour comparison.
The Best of Uluru tour runs about four to five hours, with 30 minutes of training, a one-hour ride and two guided walks. The full base tour at sunrise takes about five hours, including sunrise and a picnic, with about 2.5 hours on the Segway. The self-drive full base tour is about 2.5 hours from the Kuniya car park.
The listings set the minimum age at 12, and children must be accompanied by an adult. At the other end, the tours are not recommended for riders over 65 because of the greater risk in a fall. Families with younger children can see the base on a guided walk; our Uluru base walk tours page compares them.
Yes. Riders must weigh between 45 and 117 kg (99 to 257 lb), according to the tour listings. You also need the balance, vision and fitness to ride a bicycle and to stand for up to about three hours. The tours are not suitable during pregnancy or for people with back or spinal problems, poor cardiovascular health or recent surgery.
No. Every tour starts with Segway training, a safety briefing and a practice ride before you set off; on the Best of Uluru tour the training lasts 30 minutes. If you can ride a bicycle, you meet the fitness standard the operator asks for. You also sign a waiver, as Segway riding is listed as an adventure activity.
Yes. The full base Segway tour at sunrise and the self-drive tour both circle the full base of Uluru, with about 2.5 hours of riding. The Best of Uluru tour rides roughly a quarter of the base, the section the operator calls the most scenic, and adds guided walks to Mutitjulu Waterhole and the Mala walk caves.
The full base tour starts with sunrise at Uluru and a picnic stop (a light breakfast comes with the breakfast option) before you ride the whole base, from $181 per person. None of the Segway listings on this site includes sunset viewing in its inclusions, so for sunset book a separate evening tour; our Uluru sunset tours page compares them.
Not on the listings here: every Segway option comes with a guide, training and safety gear. The nearest thing to riding on your own is the self-drive tour, where you bring your hire car to the Kuniya car park and join a guided group of up to 10. For self-guided wheels, Outback Cycling hires bikes for the ride around the base.
Choose the Segway for a guided tour with commentary on Anangu culture, plants and geology, with training included. Choose a bike from Outback Cycling if you want to go at your own pace without a guide, or walk the 10.6 km base on foot in about 3.5 hours. Our Uluru base walk guide covers the self-guided route.
The Best of Uluru tour and the full base tour at sunrise both include pickup and drop-off from Ayers Rock Resort hotels and the campground. The self-drive tour does not: you drive about 30 minutes from the resort to the Kuniya car park. There is no public transport to Uluru, so without a car choose a tour with transfers.
The Best of Uluru tour and the full base tour at sunrise show dates well into 2027 and 2028 on the booking platforms. The self-drive tour is listed only from November to March. In summer the park advises finishing walks before 11 am, so a morning start is the cooler choice from October to March.
