How the Sunrise Walk Works

Buy your park pass first, then the morning runs from before dawn to about 1:00 pm.

  1. Buy your park pass

The park pass is not included. Buy it online before the tour: A$38 for adults, free for under-18s.

  2. Leave before sunrise

The coach departs one hour before sunrise, so start times move through the year with the light.

  3. Breakfast and the Mala walk

Eat a light breakfast with tea or coffee, hear the Tjukurpa at Kuniya Piti, then walk the Mala walk past the caves to Kantju Gorge.

  4. Lungkata walk and certificate

Continue on the Lungkata walk with your driver guide, see rock paintings, and finish at Kuniya Piti with a souvenir certificate.

Park Pass Guide

Uluru Park Pass: Prices, Hours and Which Tours Include It

What the pass costs, where to buy it, when the park opens and closes, and the tours that cover the fee.

An Uluru park pass costs A$38 per adult for 3 days or A$50 for an annual adult pass, and anyone under 18 enters free. You need one to enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, whether you drive yourself, ride the Hop On Hop Off bus or join a day tour, and most day tours do not include it. Buy it online before you go or at the entry station on the way in.

What the park pass costs

PassPrice (AUD)Who it is forWhat it covers
Adult 3-day passA$38Visitors aged 18 and overEntry to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park for 3 days
Adult annual passA$50Visitors aged 18 and overEntry for a year
NT vehicle annual passA$109A private vehicle registered in the Northern TerritoryThe driver and all passengers for a year; not tour or hire vehicles
Under 18FreeChildren and teenagersNo pass fee

There is no child price and no family pass, because under-18s pay nothing. The park lists no seniors or concession price either. Australian school students on a school trip and eligible youth groups may qualify for an exemption if they apply first. The pass covers both Uluru and Kata Tjuta, since both sit in the same national park, but it is not valid for Kings Canyon, Kakadu or any other park.

These are park prices in Australian dollars. The tour prices on this site are in US dollars, as the booking platforms show them.

Where to buy it

You have two options. Online, buy at book.parksaustralia.gov.au/passes/uluru/, then print the pass or save it to your phone and scan it at the entry station. In person, buy it at the entry station as you drive in, about ten minutes from Yulara. If you are on a tour, buy online: several operators, AAT Kings among them, ask you to have the pass before pickup, and the Emu Run listings ask you to bring a copy, digital accepted. Details and the official booking page are on uluru.gov.au.

Park opening hours by month

The park opens every day of the year, and you must leave by closing time. Hours change month by month. All times are ACST; the Northern Territory has no daylight saving.

MonthPark hours
January5:00 am to 9:00 pm
February5:00 am to 9:00 pm
March5:30 am to 8:30 pm
April5:30 am to 8:00 pm
May6:00 am to 7:30 pm
June6:30 am to 7:30 pm
July6:30 am to 7:30 pm
August6:00 am to 7:30 pm
September5:30 am to 7:30 pm
October5:00 am to 8:00 pm
November5:00 am to 8:30 pm
December5:00 am to 9:00 pm

The Cultural Centre opens from 7:00 am to 5:45 pm every day. Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the main sunrise viewing area, follows the park hours, about 35 minutes’ drive from Yulara. In October sunrise comes at roughly 6:15 am and the gates open at 5:00 am, so a self-driver has time to reach a viewing area. In June and July the gates open at 6:30 am and sunrise comes around 7:30 am.

Which tours include the park pass

Most day tours from Ayers Rock Resort list the park pass under exclusions. The pattern on this site is clear: multi-day tours tend to include it, day tours tend not to.

Astronomy tour (Uluru Astro Tours)The listing says you do not need to bring your own pass

Helicopter flights, scenic plane flights and the Field of Light listings do not mention the park pass. For the full set of 2- and 3-day options, see our Uluru 2 and 3 day tours page, and read our review of the 3-day adventure from Yulara.

Kings Canyon is a separate case. It sits in Watarrka National Park, run by the Northern Territory, and needs its own NT Parks pass. The AAT Kings Kings Canyon day trip from Ayers Rock lists that pass as excluded, A$10 per person online, and says it will be included in the price from 1 April 2027. More on our Kings Canyon tours from Uluru page.

Refunds, longer stays and seniors

The park says pass refunds are available under certain circumstances, so contact Parks Australia if your plans change. The pass comes in two lengths only, 3 days and a year, and the park lists no extension. If you are staying four days or more, the A$50 annual pass covers the whole stay for A$12 more than the 3-day pass. The park lists no seniors discount. Some tour listings still quote older pass prices or terms, so check the park’s own page for the current ones.

Cultural closures

The park is jointly managed with Anangu, the Traditional Owners, and it can close for cultural reasons, sometimes at short notice. In 2026 it closed on 25 and 26 June for Sorry Business and from 6:00 am to 11:00 am on 28 August for a funeral. Walks can also close in hot weather or for repairs. Check uluru.gov.au/news before your visit, and see our Uluru base walk guide and Valley of the Winds vs Walpa Gorge for the walk-specific rules.

A tour to pair with your pass

The AAT Kings Guided Walking Tour at Sunrise with Light Breakfast is a good first morning once your pass is sorted. It departs one hour before sunrise, includes a light breakfast and a driver guide, and walks the Mala and Lungkata sections of the base, ending at about 1:00 pm. It costs from $130 per person, rated 4.6 from 321 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. AAT Kings asks you to buy the park pass online before the tour. Our sunrise walk review has the full picture.

When your pass is bought, check availability for the sunrise walk.

"The tour was incredible. Such amazing tours guides. A lovely friendly and inviting atmosphere. Such a beautiful way to learn about the country and culture."

Rebecca Australia

"We had such an amazing time walking round the base of Uluru. Sunrise was beautiful and the changing colours of Uluru were spectacular. Breakfast was given halfway round so you may want to bring a snack along with you. Breakfast included hot drinks, cereal, granola bars, biscuits, fruit and nuts which was perfect. Three toilet stops if needed. Temperature was cool to start with so I would recommend bringing some layers. We were also glad of our fly nets as by mid morning the flies appeared! Alan was a great guide who told us stories and facts along the way. Great value for money and would highly recommend."
