Build Your Own Day
Small-group mornings, a Kata Tjuta afternoon and an Uluru sunset you can combine into one full day. Each card opens our review.
WITH BREAKFASTA three-hour SEIT small-group morning at Uluru: sunrise from a spot your guide picks, an outback picnic breakfast, the short Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole and a drive around the base. It suits travelers short on time and those who want an easy, low-walking introduction.
AFTERNOONA three-hour SEIT afternoon tour to Kata Tjuta for up to 15 passengers, with a guided walk between the domes and Walpa Gorge in the cooler months. It suits travelers who want a short, guided first look at Kata Tjuta and to be back at the resort before dinner.
KATA TJUTA SUNRISEA five-hour SEIT small-group tour for no more than 11 people: sunrise over the domes of Kata Tjuta, a picnic breakfast on its western side and a guided walk into Walpa Gorge. It suits travelers who want more time at Kata Tjuta than a combined Uluru tour gives.
SUNSETAn AAT Kings coach afternoon that drives around the base of Uluru, walks the short Kuniya track to Mutitjulu Waterhole, stops at the Cultural Centre and ends with sunset drinks and nibbles. It suits first-time visitors who want culture and the sunset in one booking without much walking.
Day Tour Guide
The combined morning tour, the two-tour full day and the small-group alternatives.
The tour that covers both Uluru and Kata Tjuta in one outing is the Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta Day Trip from AAT Kings. You watch the sun rise over Uluru with tea or coffee, drive west to a viewing point over the domes of Kata Tjuta, and walk into Walpa Gorge, all before lunch. It costs from $130 per person and rates 4.6 from 605 reviews, more reviews than any other one-day tour on this site that visits both landmarks. If you want longer at each place, two half-day tours on the same day do that better, and the pairings are set out below.
The coach picks you up from your Ayers Rock Resort hotel in the dark. The first stop is Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the main sunrise viewing area for Uluru, about 35 minutes from Yulara. It has shelters, viewing platforms, toilets and water, and from there you watch first light reach Uluru (Ayers Rock) with Kata Tjuta in the distance. Your driver guide serves tea and coffee and gives an overview of the park and the Anangu, its Traditional Owners.
From there the coach heads west. Uluru and Kata Tjuta sit 50 km apart by road, so part of the morning is spent driving, with commentary on the way. At Kata Tjuta you stop at a viewing point over the domes, then walk into Walpa Gorge. The park rates that walk Grade 3: 2.6 km return, about an hour, on a rocky track between steep walls of conglomerate rock. The tour then returns to Yulara.
AAT Kings sells the same tour on Viator, where it is listed at five hours. The operator says the morning fits a same-day flight out of Ayers Rock Airport that leaves after 1:00 pm, or after 1:30 pm in June and July. Read our review of the sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day for the full breakdown.
The combined morning gives you sunrise at Uluru and a single walk at Kata Tjuta. It does not include the Uluru base, the Mutitjulu Waterhole or the Cultural Centre, and you see Kata Tjuta for the length of one gorge walk. With a whole day free, you can book two half-day tours and cover much more.
| Plan | Tours to book | From (per person, added) | At Uluru | At Kata Tjuta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One morning, both landmarks | AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta | $130 | Sunrise viewing | Viewing point, Walpa Gorge walk |
| Full day by coach | AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta + sacred sites and sunset | $260 | Sunrise, base drive, Kuniya walk, Cultural Centre, sunset | Viewing point, Walpa Gorge walk |
| Full day in small groups | SEIT Uluru highlights sunrise + SEIT Kata Tjuta afternoon | $261 | Sunrise, picnic breakfast, Mutitjulu Waterhole, base drive | Three hours among the domes |
| Kata Tjuta at dawn | SEIT Kata Tjuta sunrise + AAT Kings sacred sites and sunset | $304 | Base drive, Kuniya walk, Cultural Centre, sunset | Sunrise, picnic breakfast, Walpa Gorge |
| One daytime tour | Uluru Culture and Kata Tjuta Trails | $108 | Cultural Centre, Kuniya walk | Walpa Gorge walk |
The coach pairing is the simplest full day: book the morning tour, rest in the middle of the day, and join the Uluru Sacred Sites and Sunset Tour in the afternoon. It drives around the base of Uluru, walks the Kuniya track to Mutitjulu Waterhole, stops at the Cultural Centre and finishes at sunset with wine and nibbles. Our sunset tours guide compares it with the shorter options.
SEIT runs smaller vehicles than the AAT Kings coaches and has no single tour that covers both landmarks, so you pair two. The Uluru Highlights Small Group Morning Tour (from $132, 4.7 from 279 reviews) takes up to 15 guests to watch the sunrise, serves an outback picnic breakfast, walks to Mutitjulu Waterhole and drives around the base in about three hours. In the afternoon the 3-Hour Small Group Kata Tjuta Afternoon Tour (from $129, 4.6 from 150 reviews) takes you among the domes and has you back at your hotel in time for dinner. One caution: SEIT’s own listing says it skips Walpa Gorge from December to March because of the heat.
If Kata Tjuta matters more to you than Uluru, start there instead. The Kata Tjuta Small Group Sunrise Tour watches the domes at first light with a group of no more than 11, then serves a picnic breakfast and walks into Walpa Gorge. Our Kata Tjuta tours page covers it in full.
AAT Kings also runs Uluru Culture and Kata Tjuta Trails, a daytime tour that walks Walpa Gorge, stops at the Cultural Centre (lunch at your own expense) and finishes with the Kuniya walk at Uluru. It costs from $108 and rates 5.0, but from only 22 reviews, and its Viator listing shows no departures from November 2026 to March 2027, so check dates before you plan around it. It skips both sunrise and sunset.
For an evening at Kata Tjuta, the AAT Kings Kata Tjuta Sunset and Valley of the Winds Walk combines a 5.4 km section of the Valley of the Winds with sunset drinks. It is listed only from April to September 2027 and has very few reviews so far. The Valley of the Winds vs Walpa Gorge guide explains how the two walks differ.
Full-day Uluru tours with a sunset barbecue, such as the Emu Run day tour, stay at Uluru and do not go to Kata Tjuta. Those dinners are covered on our dinner under the stars page.
For a combined day, start with sunrise. The walks are cooler in the morning, and from October to March the park asks walkers to finish by 11:00 am. A sunrise tour fits the Walpa Gorge walk into that window and leaves the hot middle of the day free. End the day with a sunset tour if you have the energy. The Uluru sunrise tours guide lists the other ways to see the dawn.
From June to July the mornings are cold, with average lows of about 5°C, so bring a warm jumper for the sunrise. In summer, a fly net helps.
Both landmarks are sacred to Anangu, whose law, Tjukurpa, links them to this country. Aboriginal people have lived in Central Australia for more than 30,000 years. Some sites at Uluru and Kata Tjuta are sensitive, and photographing them is prohibited; they are marked by signs, and your guide will point them out. Drones are banned throughout the park.
If you are coming from Alice Springs for one day, see the Uluru tours from Alice Springs page, and our Uluru itineraries show how to spread both landmarks over two or three days.
When you have picked your morning, check availability for the sunrise and Kata Tjuta tour.

"Very good tour and the guides, Dani and Regi, were amazing. They were knowledgeable and friendly, and made sure the tour was prompt so we could visit everywhere with enough time to enjoy ourselves. Thanks for a great tour!"

"We were so happy to see the sunrise view in Uluru, and visit Kata Tjuṯa. If we didn’t join the tour, we would have missed the impressive scenery."
"Nice sunrise trip to see Uluru from a lookout and visit one of the valley of Kata Tjuta. Very kind driver and guide. The transfer was punctual. I got more informations about the wild life, the desert and the animals from the driver than in the zoo. Although I would prefer spend more time in every place we stopped. 30-30 more minutes would be enough. No time to soak up the beauty of the desert."
"Guides were friendly, professional, very informative and helpful. I think if it was a little less expensive more people might go on these tours. sunrise was epic!"
"The tour was very well organised! Our guides, Jim and Hayley, definitely made the trip feel extra special. They both had extensive knowledge about the area and culture. The sunrise lookout over Uluru was spectacular with many different areas to view the rock from. However, you don’t get as close to the rock as you would if you were walking, cycling or on segways. We then travelled to Kata Tjuṯa (the Olga’s) which exceeded our expectations! Within Kata Tjuṯa is Waḻpa Gorge - a breathtaking walk right inside of the rock formations. It is quite rocky and uneven - if you have accessibility issues, or even older like my grandmother, it’s definitely a rolled ankle waiting to happen. We then travelled to this stunning lookout that overlooked both Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa for a wonderful photo opportunity. This tour is definitely worth the money. It is organised, lovely staff and covered Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa at the perfect rate / quality."
"Informative and friendly staff who were professional and caring."

"We absolutely love every bit of it. From pick up, the drive, onboard commentary and hike experience"
"Awesome tour! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable!!!"

Timing, walking, the park pass and how to fit both landmarks into one day.
The AAT Kings Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta Day Trip covers both in one morning: sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku with tea or coffee, a Kata Tjuta viewing stop and a guided walk into Walpa Gorge. It costs from $130 per person and rates 4.6 from 605 reviews. For a full day, pair a morning tour with an afternoon or sunset tour. See the comparison table.
The sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day runs about five hours, the length listed on the Viator version of the same tour. It starts before dawn and returns you to Yulara in time for an afternoon flight: the operator says it suits flights leaving after 1:00 pm, or after 1:30 pm in June and July. The rest of your afternoon is free.
A combined tour suits you if you have one morning. Two tours suit you if you have a whole day. The combined morning gives sunrise at Uluru and one gorge walk at Kata Tjuta, but skips the Uluru base, Mutitjulu Waterhole and the Cultural Centre. Pairing it with an afternoon sacred sites and sunset tour adds all three for about $260 per person in total.
Uluru and Kata Tjuta are 50 km apart by road. Yulara is about 20 minutes from Uluru and about 45 minutes from Kata Tjuta. On a combined tour a fair share of the morning goes on the drive between them, and your guide uses it for commentary on the park, its geology and Anangu culture. Our Uluru vs Kata Tjuta guide compares the two.
No. They are separate rock formations in the same national park, about 50 km apart by road. Uluru is a single rock that rises 348 m above the plain, with a circumference of 9.4 km. Kata Tjuta is a group of 36 domes covering more than 20 square kilometres, the tallest rising 546 m above the plain. Both are sacred to Anangu.
No. The sunrise and Kata Tjuta tour walks into Walpa Gorge, 2.6 km return and about an hour. The Valley of the Winds loop is 7.4 km, takes three to four hours and is Grade 4, so it needs its own tour, such as the SEIT guided circuit hike. Our Valley of the Winds vs Walpa Gorge guide compares the two walks.
Pickup is before dawn, so the time moves through the year with the sunrise. Sunrise at Uluru is roughly 6:15 am in October, about 5:50 am in November and December and about 7:30 am in June and July. The drive from Yulara to the sunrise area takes about 35 minutes. Confirm your exact pickup time with the operator the day before.
No. The AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta tour includes tea and coffee at sunrise, not a meal, so eat something before pickup or bring a snack. If you want breakfast, SEIT's small-group sunrise tours at Uluru and at Kata Tjuta both serve an outback picnic breakfast, and you can pair one with an afternoon tour to the other landmark.
No. The listing excludes park entry. Adults need a pass, A$38 for 3 days or A$50 for a year, and under-18s enter free; there is no child or family price. Buy it online before your tour and keep it on your phone, or buy it at the entry station. The park pass guide covers opening hours too.
Not much. The sunrise area has short paths, and the main walk is Walpa Gorge: 2.6 km return, about an hour, rated Grade 3 by the park, on a rocky, uneven track. The listing says the tour suits all age groups, though the Viator version asks for a moderate level of fitness. Wear closed shoes and carry about a litre of water.
Bring layers. Winter mornings are cold, with average lows of about 4 to 6°C in June and July, while summer days reach the high 30s. Wear closed walking shoes for Walpa Gorge, a hat and sunscreen, and carry a refillable water bottle of about a litre. A fly net helps in summer. Bring your park pass on your phone or printed.
Alice Springs is 465 km from Uluru, about 5.5 hours each way by road, so a day trip from there spends most of the day driving. The Emu Run day trip from Alice Springs focuses on Uluru with a sunset barbecue and does not include Kata Tjuta. To see both, stay at least one night in Yulara. See tours from Alice Springs.
