Field of Light Guide

Field of Light Uluru: Sunrise Tour or Evening Ticket?

The artwork, the sunrise tour, the resort's evening tickets and what to bring.

The simplest way to see the Field of Light is the AAT Kings Field of Light sunrise tour, from $80 per person and rated 4.6 from 678 reviews, the most-reviewed Field of Light listing on this site. You walk among the lights while it is still dark, then watch the sun rise behind Uluru from a dune top with a hot drink in hand. If you would rather see the field after dark or with dinner, Ayers Rock Resort sells its own evening tickets, compared below.

What the Field of Light is

Field of Light is a work by the artist Bruce Munro: more than 50,000 frosted glass spheres on slender stems, spread across the desert within sight of Uluru and lit by solar power. It opened in 2016, planned as a one-year installation, and has been extended again and again; 2026 marks its tenth year, and it is reported to stay until at least the end of 2029. Munro has said the artwork will only remain as long as it is welcome. The spheres slowly shift through soft colors, so the field looks different from one minute to the next.

The site sits a short drive from the resort, on a desert rise with views to both Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Sunrise tour or evening ticket?

There are two ways in: the sunrise tour sold on GetYourGuide and Viator, or the resort’s own evening tickets.

The sunrise tour price is in US dollars, as the booking platforms show it; the three resort tickets are Ayers Rock Resort’s gate prices in Australian dollars. The same sunrise tour is also sold on Viator from $96.

Choose sunrise if you want two things in one early start: the lights glowing in the dark and the color coming up on Uluru. The lights dim as daylight takes over, so you see the change from artwork to landscape. Choose an evening ticket if you are not an early riser, or if you want to make a night of it with food and drinks; the Star Pass and the Uluru Dinner both start at sunset. For other ways to eat out in the desert at night, including Sounds of Silence, see our Uluru dinner under the stars guide.

How the sunrise morning runs

The coach leaves well before dawn from four pickup points at the resort: Sails in the Desert, Desert Gardens Hotel, the Outback Pioneer and Ayers Rock Campground. On arrival your driver guide gives the background to the installation, then you follow the paths through the field in darkness. As the sky lightens you walk up to the dune-top viewing area, where tea, coffee and hot chocolate are served. The sun rises behind Uluru, and if you turn around, Kata Tjuta catches the first light. The tour lasts about two hours, so you are back in time for breakfast, which is not included.

If you want breakfast and more time at the rock itself, an Uluru sunrise tour such as the small-group sunrise with picnic breakfast is the better fit. Field of Light gives you the sunrise from a distance, framed by the artwork.

Best forOne early start that combines the artwork and sunrise

Dress for the cold. Nights in the desert drop sharply in winter: the average July minimum at Yulara is 4.4°C, and near-freezing pre-dawn mornings are common in June and July. Wear warm layers, a hat and closed shoes for the sand. Bring a camera for the field and the dune top.

Infants sit on an adult’s lap on the coach. The park pass (A$38 for adults, free for under-18s) is needed for any tour that enters Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, so buy it if you are also doing a sunrise, sunset or base walk tour; our park pass guide explains how.

Fitting it into your stay

The sunrise tour is short and done by mid-morning, which leaves the rest of the day free. On a first visit, one good plan is to save Field of Light for a second morning, after a first sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the main sunrise viewing area. Our Uluru itinerary shows how the mornings and evenings fit together, and things to do in Uluru lists the other activities.
