"Great early morning walk around the base of Uluru. It's a very easy walk with lots of stops to talk about points of significance for the Anangu people. It is cold in the beginning but warms up as the day goes on. Michelle was great, very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does. Would highly recommend!"

The Uluru Base Walk: Distance, Sections and When to Go
How far, how long, which sections, the heat rules and the 2026 repair notices.
The Uluru base walk is a 10.6 km loop around the foot of the rock, and it takes about three and a half hours on foot. You can walk it on your own with nothing more than a park pass, it is graded 3 and mostly flat, and in hot weather the park asks you to finish before 11 am. Start at first light, carry plenty of water, and check uluru.gov.au/news on the morning you go, because sections can close at short notice.
The base walk at a glance
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Distance | 10.6 km loop around Uluru |
| Walking time | About 3 hours 30 minutes |
| Grade | Grade 3 (the park notes some gradings have recently changed) |
| Cost | Park pass only: A$38 per adult for 3 days, under-18s free |
| Where to join | Mala car park or Kuniya car park; the Liru walk links the Cultural Centre when it is open |
| Best time | From sunrise, finishing before 11 am in hot weather |
| Park hours in October | 5:00 am to 8:00 pm |
| Water | Carry your own, at least 2 liters each |
Uluru rises 348 m above the plain and measures 9.4 km around. The track stays at its foot the whole way. Walking up Uluru has been closed permanently since 26 October 2019, and the base walk is the way to see the rock up close.
The sections around the rock
The base walk joins several shorter walks, and each has its own character. Most people do the whole loop from one car park, but you can also walk a single section and drive to the next.
| Section | Length and time | Grade | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mala walk | 2 km return, 1 hour 30 minutes | 2 | Caves and rock art on the way to Kantju Gorge; free ranger-guided walk |
| Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole | 1 km return, 30 to 45 minutes | 2 | A waterhole under the rock; no toilets |
| Lungkata walk | 4 km, 1 hour 30 minutes return | 3 | Closes for the day from 2 pm at 40°C or above |
| Liru walk | 4 km return, 1 hour 30 minutes | 2 | Links the Cultural Centre to the base; closed from 1 April 2026 |
| North-east walk | 4.4 km one way, 1 hour 45 minutes | 3 | Closes for the day from 11 am at 40°C or above |
The Mala walk passes caves along the base and ends at Kantju Gorge, where water runs off the rock after rain. The Kuniya walk leads into Mutitjulu Waterhole, where guides tell the Tjukurpa of Kuniya and Liru. The Lungkata and north-east sections make up the long stretches of the loop, and their heat closures use the forecast or actual temperature, so a hot forecast alone can close them.
Heat, water and timing
From October to March the mean maximum at Yulara runs from about 32 to 38°C, and daytime temperatures regularly pass 35°C. The park’s advice for hot weather is simple: walk in the cool morning hours and finish before 11 am. With three and a half hours of walking, that means starting soon after the gates open. In October the park opens at 5:00 am; in June and July it opens at 6:30 am, when mornings can be near freezing.
Carry all the water you need. One operator asks walkers to bring at least 2 liters for the walk, and in summer you will want more. Wear closed shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Summer also brings large numbers of flies, and the park suggests a head net, which you can buy on arrival. In the cooler months from May to September, daytime highs usually sit between 20 and 30°C, and you can walk later in the day.
Photography and respect
Uluru is sacred to Anangu, the Traditional Owners, and parts of the base are sensitive sites. They are marked by signs and on park maps, and photographing them is prohibited. On the north-east face, take only wide shots from a distance and avoid details on the top-left side. Ask before you photograph Anangu people, stay on the marked track, and leave the drone at home: drones are prohibited in the park.
The 2026 repair notices
Heavy rain in February and March 2026 caused storm damage around the base. The park ran repairs in stages on parts of the Mala and Lungkata sections, with alternative routes wherever possible. The Liru walk from the Cultural Centre closed from 1 April 2026 because of flooding, and a temporary track was set up along the old road toward Pulari, a registered sacred site where photography is not permitted.
The park has not posted a notice saying the Liru walk has reopened, and repair work can close other sections briefly. Check uluru.gov.au/news and the park app before you set out, and read the signs at the car parks. Cultural closures can also be announced at short notice.
Shorter walks and the free ranger walk
If the full loop is too much, the Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole and the Mala walk together cover the waterhole, the caves and Kantju Gorge in a little over two hours. The park’s ranger-guided Mala walk is free for park visitors and starts at 8:00 am from October to April and 10:00 am from May to September. Confirm the meeting point with the park before you go.
Bike or Segway
Outback Cycling hires bikes for the Uluru Bike Ride, a self-guided ride around the rock. It normally starts from the Liru walk and moved to Mala car park during the Liru closure. If you would rather be guided on wheels, our Uluru Segway tours page compares the full base and part-base Segway rides.
If you want a guide
The Uluru Morning Guided Base Walk by AAT Kings walks the full loop with a driver guide, includes hotel pickup and a light breakfast, and runs about 4.5 hours, from $156 per person with a rating of 4.7 from 167 reviews. Its Viator dates run from 10 to 31 October 2026 and then June to October 2027, so it skips the hot months. Read our review.
For summer dates, the SEIT small-group trek of Uluru’s base walks the full loop from sunrise with a picnic breakfast, from $174 per person, rated 4.8 from 273 reviews. The AAT Kings Guided Walking Tour at Sunrise covers the Mala and Lungkata sections, not the whole loop. All three, plus the Segway option, are compared on our Uluru base walk tours page. None of them includes the park pass; see our Uluru park pass guide.
Without a car, a guided walk also solves the transport: Yulara has no taxis or public transport, and the resort’s free shuttle does not go into the park. Our Uluru without a car page covers the other options.

What Uluru Base Walk Guests Say
Ratings and review counts are each platform's live figures (GetYourGuide or Viator) as of October 2026 and may shift slightly day to day.
"Stunning sunrise colours in the rock, pretty waterholes and fascinating rock art. Definitely worth going with a guide to learn about the cultural history of the rock."
"Do not miss doing this activity! The scenery was breathtaking and the information excellent. It was hot so we were glad we had such an early morning start. Our guide was great."
"It is a 11km flat walk around Uluru but get ready for the sticky flies which certainly requires a net for the hat. You can also do the walk yourself without a guide more quickly but having a guide to learn about geography and Anangu Culture is very nice."
"Michelle was an excellent guide. Extremely knowledgeable. Tour was well paced. Enjoyed immensely. Make sure you take water and a walking snack. Uluru is an immense beast and takes your breath away. Lucky to have experienced while the landscape is so green."
"The Base Walk was a well thought out, fun morning. Mitch and Chloe we great guides (we thought Mitch showed wonderful mentoring skills with the younger guides on both this tour and the Kings Canyon rim walk that we did the day"
"Great guide, made it so much more meaningful. Celia made it both fun and informative. Arrived on time, comfortable transport friendly team."
"Glen our guide was top class, 5 stars!! We had an awesome start to the day with perfect weather for our base walk around Uluru, Roger our bus driver was awesome as well, it was a sensational morning tour! Couldn’t recommend highly enough."

Uluru Base Walk: Questions
Distance, timing, where to start, closures and the rules on the track.
The Uluru base walk is a 10.6 km loop around the foot of the rock. Tour operators often round it to 10.5 km. The track stays at the base the whole way and is graded 3. Uluru itself rises 348 m above the plain and measures 9.4 km around. See the guided options if you want company.
Allow about three and a half hours of walking for the full 10.6 km loop, plus time for stops at Mutitjulu Waterhole, the Mala caves and Kantju Gorge. In hot weather the park asks walkers to finish before 11 am, so start soon after the park opens. Guided walks run longer, about 4.5 hours with AAT Kings, because they include pickup and breakfast.
Yes. The base walk is open to anyone with a valid park pass, and you do not need a guide or a booking. Adults pay A$38 for a 3-day pass and under-18s enter free. Carry your own water, at least 2 liters each, and check the signs and uluru.gov.au/news for closures. Pass details are on our park pass page.
The walk is a loop, so you can join it at several points. Most walkers start from the Mala car park or the Kuniya car park at the base of the rock. The Liru walk normally links the Cultural Centre to the base, but it closed from 1 April 2026 because of flooding. Uluru is about 20 minutes' drive from Yulara, and the park roads are sealed.
Check before you go. Storm damage in early 2026 led to staged repairs on parts of the Mala and Lungkata sections, and the Liru walk from the Cultural Centre closed from 1 April 2026. Some sections also close on very hot days, and cultural closures can come at short notice. The park posts updates at uluru.gov.au/news and in its app.
The loop joins the Mala walk (2 km return, caves and Kantju Gorge), the Kuniya walk (1 km return to Mutitjulu Waterhole), the Lungkata walk (4 km return) and the north-east walk (4.4 km one way). The Liru walk links the Cultural Centre to the base. You can walk a single section and drive between car parks if the full loop is too long.
Yes. Outback Cycling runs the Uluru Bike Ride, a self-guided bike hire around the rock. It normally operates from the Liru walk and moved to the Mala car park while the Liru walk was closed. Confirm the current start point with the operator. If you would rather be guided on wheels, see our Uluru Segway tours.
Early morning. In October the park opens at 5:00 am, and in June and July at 6:30 am. Start at first light, carry plenty of water and aim to finish before 11 am, as the park advises in hot weather. From October to March mean maximums at Yulara run from about 32 to 38°C. In winter, mornings are cold, so start in layers.
Plan as if there are none. The park lists no toilets on the Kuniya walk, and it does not list drinking water points along the base walk. Bring at least 2 liters per person, more in summer, and fill up before you leave Yulara. The Cultural Centre, open from 7:00 am to 5:45 pm every day, has the Ininti Cafe if you need supplies.
Some sites around the base are sacred to Anangu and are signposted; photographing them is prohibited. On the north-east face, take only wide shots from a distance and avoid details on the top-left side. Ask before photographing Anangu people. Drones are prohibited throughout the park, and commercial use of park images needs a permit.
No. Walking up Uluru has been closed permanently since 26 October 2019. It was not generally permitted under Tjukurpa, Anangu law, and the park's Board of Management voted unanimously to close it. The base walk is how visitors see Uluru up close today. If you want a guide for it, compare the options on our Uluru base walk tours page.
