Guided Base Walks

Uluru Base Walk Tours: Which Guided Walk to Book

Full loop or part of it, small group or coach, on foot or on a Segway.

For a guide around the whole base of Uluru, book the SEIT Guided Trek of Uluru’s Base in a Small Group. It collects you from your Ayers Rock Resort hotel about an hour before sunrise, walks the full loop with a picnic breakfast on the way, and costs from $174 per person, rated 4.8 from 273 reviews. The AAT Kings morning walk covers the same loop by coach for less, and the AAT Kings sunrise walk covers only part of the base.

The guided base walks side by side

Three tours on this site walk the base of Uluru with a guide, and a fourth rides it on a Segway. They differ in how much of the loop you cover and how many people share the guide.

The park measures the base walk at 10.6 km, about three and a half hours on foot, Grade 3. The operators round it to 10.5 km.

The small-group sunrise trek

SEIT’s trek is the one to pick if you want the full base, sunrise and a small group in one morning. The vehicle seats a maximum of 15, and the guide starts walking with you before the sun is up, stopping near the rock to watch the first light reach it. From there you continue along the track past waterholes and rock art. On the Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole the guide tells the Tjukurpa of Liru and Kuniya, and on the Mala walk to Kantju Gorge the story of the Mala people. Breakfast comes in a carry pack and you eat it along the way.

Optional audio guides cover French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Mandarin. On GetYourGuide you can cancel for a full refund up to 3 days ahead. The same trek is also sold on Viator as Full Uluru Base Walk at Sunrise Including Breakfast, from $177 with 461 reviews at 4.8, but that listing does not offer free cancellation and shows dates only from October 2026 to March 2027. Our small-group base walk review covers the morning step by step.

The AAT Kings morning base walk

The Uluru Morning Guided Base Walk is the full loop with a larger operator. It runs about 4.5 hours, starts with a light breakfast, and takes in sacred sites, rock art and Kantju Gorge, where water pours off the rock after rain. The listing asks for at least a moderate level of fitness and offers free cancellation. Check its dates before you plan around it: Viator lists departures from 10 to 31 October 2026 and then June to October 2027, so it does not run through the hot months. Read our review of the morning base walk.

The sunrise walk that covers part of the base

The Guided Walking Tour at Sunrise with Light Breakfast is often booked as a base walk, and its title suggests the whole loop. The itinerary tells a shorter story: breakfast and the Tjukurpa at Kuniya Piti, then the Mala walk past caves to Kantju Gorge, then the Lungkata walk with the story of the blue-tongue lizard, ending back at Kuniya Piti with a souvenir certificate. It leaves one hour before sunrise, from $130 per person, rated 4.6 from 321 reviews. The listing says it ends at about 1:00 pm, which can clash with same-day flights. It is not wheelchair accessible, and the operator asks you to bring at least 2 liters of water. Our sunrise walk review has the detail.

The Segway alternative

If 10.6 km on foot is too far, the Uluru Base Segway Tour at Sunrise covers the whole base on a Segway. After training and a sunrise picnic you ride for about 2.5 hours, with a guided walk into Mutitjulu Waterhole. It is recommended for ages 12 to 55, children under 12 cannot take part, and riders over 118 kg are not accepted. The shorter Best of Uluru Segway and Walking Tour rides about a quarter of the base and adds the Mala walk on foot. Both are compared on our Uluru Segway tours page.

Pay for a guide or walk it yourself?

The base walk is free to walk once you hold a park pass, and you need no guide or booking. A guided walk earns its price in three ways. First, transport: Yulara has no taxis or public transport, and the base is about 20 minutes’ drive from the resort, so without a car a tour is the simplest way to reach the start before sunrise. Second, the stories: the guides explain the Tjukurpa linked to each section, the rock art and the plants, and that context is hard to get from signboards alone. Third, the timing: the guide starts you early enough to finish before the heat.

Walk it yourself if you have a car, like your own pace and want to stop where you please. Our self-guided Uluru base walk guide covers the sections, the heat rules, water and the 2026 repair notices. The park also runs a free ranger-guided Mala walk, starting at 8:00 am from October to April and 10:00 am from May to September. It covers 2 km of the base, not the whole loop.

Wherever you walk, Uluru is sacred to Anangu, the Traditional Owners. Some sites along the base are signposted as sensitive, and photographing them is prohibited. Guides point these out as you go.

What to know before you book

  • Pickup: SEIT collects you from any Ayers Rock Resort hotel and the AAT Kings morning walk lists hotel pickup and drop-off; the AAT Kings sunrise walk lists coach transport, so confirm your pickup point when you book. Departure times follow the sunrise, about an hour before dawn.
  • Duration: the SEIT trek runs about six hours on its Viator listing, the AAT Kings morning walk about 4.5 hours, and the AAT Kings sunrise walk ends at about 1:00 pm.
  • Walking: the track is long but mostly flat. You need at least moderate fitness, closed shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The AAT Kings sunrise walk is listed as not wheelchair accessible, and the two full-loop walks ask for steady walking over several hours.
  • Park pass: none of the three includes it. Adults pay A$38 for 3 days and under-18s enter free. Buy it online before your tour; our park pass guide has the detail.
  • Meals: all three include breakfast. Bring your own water, at least 2 liters each.
  • Cancellation: free up to 3 days ahead on the SEIT trek (GetYourGuide), up to 24 hours on the AAT Kings sunrise walk, and free cancellation is listed on the AAT Kings morning walk (Viator).
  • Heat and repairs: in hot weather the park asks walkers to finish before 11 am. Storm repairs in 2026 affected parts of the Mala and Lungkata sections, and sections can close at short notice, so check uluru.gov.au/news before you go.
  • Who suits which: the SEIT trek suits walkers who want sunrise, the full loop and a small group; the AAT Kings morning walk suits travelers in the cooler months; the sunrise walk suits anyone who wants the stories without the whole 10.6 km.

When you have your morning picked, check availability for the small-group base walk.
