Kata Tjuta Guide
Which Kata Tjuta Tour to Book
Sunrise, afternoon or the full hike, and why a combined Uluru tour gives you less time at the domes.
The best Kata Tjuta tour for most visitors is SEIT’s Kata Tjuta Small Group Sunrise Tour with Picnic Breakfast. A group of no more than 11 watches the domes catch the first light, eats an outback picnic breakfast on the western side and walks into Walpa Gorge with a guide, over about five hours. It costs from $174 per person and rates 4.7 from 135 reviews. If you prefer an afternoon, or want to hike the Valley of the Winds, SEIT runs both, and they are compared below.
Why a dedicated Kata Tjuta tour
Many visitors see Kata Tjuta, also called the Olgas, as the second half of a combined Uluru morning. The AAT Kings Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta Day Trip is a good tour (from $130, 4.6 from 605 reviews), but it watches the sunrise at Uluru and spends part of the morning on the 50 km drive between the two. At Kata Tjuta you get a viewing stop and the Walpa Gorge walk. A dedicated tour gives the domes the sunrise, the breakfast and the guide’s full attention. If you have only one morning for both landmarks, the Uluru and Kata Tjuta day tours page covers the combined option.
Kata Tjuta is a Pitjantjatjara name that means “many heads”. The 36 domes cover more than 20 square kilometres, and the tallest rises 546 m above the plain, higher than Uluru. Like Uluru, Kata Tjuta is sacred to Anangu, the Traditional Owners of the park. Our Uluru vs Kata Tjuta guide explains how the two differ.
The Kata Tjuta tours, side by side
| Tour | From | Rating | Time of day | What you do | Food |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEIT small-group sunrise | $174 | 4.7 (135) | Sunrise, about 5 hours | Sunrise view, Walpa Gorge | ✓ Picnic breakfast |
| SEIT afternoon, small group | $129 | 4.6 (150) | Afternoon, 3 hours | Drive among the domes, short walk | ✗ |
| SEIT Valley of the Winds hike | $174 | 4.5 (25) | Morning, about 5 hours | Full Valley of the Winds circuit | ✓ Morning tea |
| AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta | $130 | 4.6 (605) | Uluru sunrise, about 5 hours | Viewing stop, Walpa Gorge | ✗ Tea and coffee |
All four pick you up from Ayers Rock Resort, and none includes the park pass. Read our review of the Kata Tjuta sunrise for the detail on the lead tour.
The sunrise tour
Your guide meets you at your hotel entrance in the dark and drives west, about 45 minutes from Yulara. At the viewing area you walk to a vantage point over the domes for the sunrise. The park’s sunrise spot here, the Kata Tjuta dune viewing area, has Uluru on the horizon behind you and can get crowded at dawn. Afterward the group moves to the western side of Kata Tjuta for a picnic breakfast, then walks into Walpa Gorge, named for the wind that blows between the domes. The listing includes a bottle of water and asks you to bring a hat, closed-toe shoes, a daypack and some cash.
SEIT sells the same tour on Viator, where it has 255 reviews, but the Viator version does not offer free cancellation. On GetYourGuide you can cancel free up to three days before.
The afternoon tour
SEIT’s 3-Hour Small Group Kata Tjuta Afternoon Tour (from $129, 4.6 from 150 reviews) suits anyone who does not want another early start. A vehicle of up to 15 drives around to the four main domes, and you walk between them while your guide talks through the geology and Anangu culture. You are back at your hotel in time for dinner. Meals are not included, pickup is from Ayers Rock Resort only, and SEIT’s Viator listing says the tour skips Walpa Gorge from December to March because of the heat. Our afternoon tour review has more.
The Valley of the Winds hike
The Valley of the Winds is the longer walk at Kata Tjuta: a 7.4 km loop, three to four hours, rated Grade 4 by the park. SEIT’s Valley of the Winds Circuit Hike (from $174, 4.5 from 25 reviews) walks the full circuit with a guide over about five hours, with morning tea and hotel transfers. The listing excludes children under 5 and travelers with a low fitness level, mobility problems or respiratory issues. Its Viator listing shows departures in October 2026 and then from April to October 2027, with none over the summer.
Heat matters here. The park closes the walk at Karu Lookout, the first lookout, from 11:00 am when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36°C or more, which cuts off the full loop. The Valley of the Winds vs Walpa Gorge guide compares the two walks in detail. Read our hike review for the tour itself.
Other Kata Tjuta options
AAT Kings lists a Half Day Kata Tjuta and Valley of the Winds Tour from $160 that walks about 5 km of the valley, but it has only 18 reviews. Its Viator sunset version runs from April to September 2027. For a private tour, Australian Private Tours runs a Kata Tjuta Private Guided Sunrise Tour from $960 per group of up to six, with a customisable itinerary and few reviews so far.
From the air, the 25-Minute Uluru and Kata Tjuta Helicopter Experience (from $258, 4.8 from 616 reviews) flies past both landmarks, though not over the top of either. See the helicopter tours page.

- Pickup: included from Ayers Rock Resort hotels; your guide meets you at the hotel entrance before dawn.
- Duration: about five hours.
- Walking: the Walpa Gorge walk is 2.6 km return, about an hour, Grade 3, on a rocky track. Wear closed-toe shoes. The Viator version asks for a moderate level of fitness.

- Children: infants need a car seat, which the Northern Territory requires; the infant price includes car seat hire.
- Cancellation: free up to three days before the tour on GetYourGuide, not the usual 24 hours.
- Best for: travelers who want Kata Tjuta at first light, small-group fans, and anyone who has already seen the Uluru sunrise.

When you have your morning, check availability for the Kata Tjuta sunrise.

Kata Tjuta Tours: Questions
How long to allow, sunrise or afternoon, the walks, the name and getting there without a car.
For most visitors, SEIT's Kata Tjuta Small Group Sunrise Tour: sunrise over the domes, an outback picnic breakfast and a guided walk into Walpa Gorge, with no more than 11 guests, over about five hours. It costs from $174 per person and rates 4.7 from 135 reviews. Hikers should look at the guided Valley of the Winds circuit. See the comparison.
Yes, if you have the time. Kata Tjuta is a group of 36 domes, the tallest rising 546 m above the plain, and its walks lead you into gorges between the domes. It sits about 45 minutes' drive from Yulara. Half a day is enough for Walpa Gorge; allow most of a morning for the Valley of the Winds loop.
Allow at least half a day. The Walpa Gorge walk is 2.6 km return and takes about an hour. The full Valley of the Winds loop is 7.4 km and takes three to four hours. Add about 45 minutes each way from Yulara. Tours run three hours for the SEIT afternoon tour and about five hours for the sunrise tour and the guided hike.
Kata Tjuta is a Pitjantjatjara name meaning 'many heads', a description of the 36 domes that make up the formation. The park is jointly managed by Anangu, its Traditional Owners, and the Australian Government, and the area is sacred to Anangu. Some sites are signposted as sensitive, and photographing them is prohibited.
Yes. The Olgas is the English name for Kata Tjuta, and Mount Olga is the English name of its highest dome. The park uses Kata Tjuta, the Anangu name, and so do most tour operators, though some listings still write 'the Olgas' in brackets. An 'Olgas tour' is a Kata Tjuta tour. Our Uluru vs Kata Tjuta guide compares the two.
Book a combined tour if you have one morning for both landmarks: the AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day gives you a viewing stop and Walpa Gorge after an Uluru sunrise. Book a dedicated tour if you want sunrise at the domes, breakfast there or the Valley of the Winds. See Uluru and Kata Tjuta day tours.
Yes. Sunrise is usually watched from the Kata Tjuta dune viewing area, about 35 minutes from Yulara, which can get crowded at dawn; SEIT's small-group sunrise tour goes at first light. At sunset, the Kata Tjuta sunset viewing area has water, toilets and a picnic area. AAT Kings lists a Kata Tjuta sunset with part of the Valley of the Winds from April to September 2027.
Yes, with a car: roads in the park are sealed, and a park pass is all you need. Without a car, the Uluru Hop On Hop Off pass includes a return trip to Kata Tjuta on its 1-day and 2-day passes, and two on its 3-day pass. The free resort shuttle does not enter the park, and there are no taxis. See Uluru without a car.
The SEIT sunrise tour has an infant price that includes car seat hire, since car seats are mandatory for infants in the Northern Territory. Walpa Gorge is short but rocky, so small children may need carrying. The Valley of the Winds hike is not suitable for children under 5. Children under 18 enter the park free.
SEIT's Kata Tjuta Small Group Sunrise Tour includes an outback picnic breakfast on the western side of the domes and a bottle of water. The SEIT Valley of the Winds hike includes morning tea and light refreshments. The SEIT afternoon tour includes no food, and the AAT Kings sunrise and Kata Tjuta half day serves tea and coffee at sunrise only.
Professional Helicopter Services flies past both landmarks on its 25-minute Uluru and Kata Tjuta flight, from $258 per person and rated 4.8 from 616 reviews, and on a 36-minute sunset flight. The flights do not go over the top of Uluru or Kata Tjuta, out of respect for their cultural significance. See Uluru helicopter tours.
Not on a day trip: Alice Springs is 465 km from Uluru, and the Emu Run day trip covers Uluru only. Multi-day tours from Alice Springs, such as Autopia's 2-day overnight camping trip, include both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Our 2 and 3-day tours page compares them.
