How It Actually Works
Uluru and Kata Tjuta look close on a map, but they are 50 km apart by road. Sunrise tours collect you in the dark, and on hot days the walking is over by 11 am. A short stay works when you plan around those three facts.

Sunset, guided base walks, helicopter flights, Kings Canyon and multi-day trips. Each card opens our review of that tour.
KATA TJUTA SUNRISEA five-hour SEIT small-group tour for no more than 11 people: sunrise over the domes of Kata Tjuta, a picnic breakfast on its western side and a guided walk into Walpa Gorge. It suits travelers who want more time at Kata Tjuta than a combined Uluru tour gives.
SCENIC FLIGHTA 25-minute helicopter flight that takes in both Uluru and the domes of Kata Tjuta, with return bus transfers from your Ayers Rock Resort hotel. It suits travelers who want both landmarks from the air without the longer sunset flight.
SUNSET + BBQAn AAT Kings evening that starts with sunset drinks and nibbles at Uluru, moves to a barbecue site among the dunes inside the park for dinner, and ends with a guide pointing out the southern stars. It suits travelers who want sunset, dinner and stargazing in one booking.
KINGS CANYONA full-day coach trip from Ayers Rock Resort to Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park, with a cooked breakfast at Kings Creek Station and a choice of the Rim Walk or an easier canyon-floor walk. It suits fit walkers staying at Yulara with a spare day, and those happy to take the shorter option.
3-DAY ADVENTUREA three-day, two-night small-group camping tour that starts at Ayers Rock Airport or Yulara, covers Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, and ends in Alice Springs (or back at Yulara by shuttle). It suits active travelers who want the three big Red Centre sights with walking and camp life.
FIELD OF LIGHTAn AAT Kings early-morning tour that walks you through the Field of Light in the dark, then watches sunrise over Uluru from a dune-top viewing area with tea, coffee or hot chocolate. It suits early risers who want to see the installation and a sunrise in one short outing.
Where to Stay
The tours on this site collect from the Ayers Rock Resort hotels in Yulara, so choose by budget and room type: the pickup stops first, then apartments and budget beds.
Tour listings that name their stops name these hotels, so the early sunrise coach collects you at the door. Free resort shuttle to Town Square.
Same resort, same shuttle. Outback Lodge shares the Outback Hotel stop; Emu Walk and The Lost Camel are not named as stops, so check where your tour collects.
About three hours from Yulara. A night here suits a self-drive Red Centre loop and an early start on the Rim Walk; tours do not collect here for Uluru.
How to Choose
Which tour to book first, what the others add, and how the park works.
If you book one Uluru tour, make it AAT Kings’ Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta half-day tour. It collects you from your Ayers Rock Resort hotel before dawn, puts you at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku for sunrise over Uluru with tea or coffee, then drives west to Kata Tjuta for a walk into Walpa Gorge. That is both landmarks in one morning, from $130 per person, rated 4.6 from 605 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. The listing says it suits a departure day for flights leaving after 1:00 pm (after 1:30 pm in June and July).
Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta stand 50 km apart by road inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and both are sacred to Anangu, the Traditional Owners. The Alice Springs day trip has the most reviews of any tour on this site.
The sunrise and Kata Tjuta morning handles the 50 km drive between the two for you. For a whole day at Uluru itself, Emu Run’s Uluru day tour with sunset BBQ visits the Cultural Centre, walks the Mala walk and the track to Mutitjulu Waterhole, then serves a barbecue with sparkling wine at sunset, from $230 per person. Compare them on our Uluru and Kata Tjuta day tours page or read our review of the morning tour.
SEIT’s Uluru Highlights small-group sunrise spends three hours at Uluru, with an outback picnic breakfast and the walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole, from $132 per person. The Field of Light sunrise tour walks you through Bruce Munro’s field of more than 50,000 lights before dawn, from $80 per person and rated 4.6 from 678 reviews. Walkers can start the full base walk at first light on SEIT’s small-group base walk at sunrise. See Uluru sunrise tours, guided base walk tours and our review of the highlights tour.
The 1.5-hour sunset tour from AAT Kings is the lowest-priced sunset tour here, from $68 per person, with sparkling wine and a cheeseboard. SEIT’s small-group sunset costs from $80, and AAT Kings’ Sacred Sites and Sunset tour adds a drive around the base first, from $130. Coach tours watch from the bus sunset viewing area. Dinner options sit on Uluru dinner under the stars. See also Uluru sunset tours and our review of the BBQ and star talk.
Kata Tjuta’s 36 domes rise up to 546 m above the plain. SEIT’s Kata Tjuta small-group sunrise runs with a maximum of 11 people and includes a picnic breakfast. The 3-hour afternoon tour costs from $129, and the guided Valley of the Winds hike covers the 7.4 km Grade 4 circuit. On hot days that walk closes at Karu Lookout from 11 am. Read Kata Tjuta tours, Valley of the Winds vs Walpa Gorge and our review.
Professional Helicopter Services flies the 15-minute Uluru flight, from $161 per person and rated 4.9 from 670 reviews. Only its 25-minute flight and the 36-minute sunset helicopter add Kata Tjuta. Out of respect for both places, the flights do not pass directly over or fully circle Uluru or Kata Tjuta. Ayers Rock Scenic Flights’ Rock Blast is a fixed-wing plane flight, from $128. See Uluru helicopter tours and our review of the 25-minute flight.
Kings Canyon is about three hours’ drive from Yulara, so the AAT Kings Kings Canyon day trip starts early, stops for breakfast at Kings Creek Station and offers the 6 km Rim Walk or a shorter creek bed walk. Autopia’s 3-day tour from Yulara sleeps in eco tents or swags and includes meals and all national park fees. Adventure Tours Australia’s 3-day camping tour runs from Alice Springs or Yulara, from $555 per person. Compare them on Uluru 2 and 3-day tours and Kings Canyon tours from Uluru, or read our review of the Autopia trip.
Everyone 18 and over needs a park pass: A$38 for 3 days or A$50 for a year, while under-18s enter free. Buy it online before you go or at the entry station. Most day tours exclude it; the Autopia and Adventure Tours Australia multi-day trips include park fees. Opening hours change by month (in October, 5:00 am to 8:00 pm). See park pass and entry fees.
The park itself recommends May to September, when daytime highs usually sit between 20 and 30°C. From October to March the average maximum runs from 32 to 38°C, flies are heavy, and walks should end by 11 am. Read the best time to visit Uluru.
Direct flights reach Ayers Rock Airport from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns, and the airport is about 10 minutes from Yulara. Yulara has no taxis or public transport, and hire cars are limited, so book weeks ahead. Plan with how to get to Uluru, where to stay near Uluru and the Uluru itineraries.
The full base walk is 10.6 km and takes about three and a half hours. Rangers lead a free Mala walk at 8 am from October to April and at 10 am from May to September. Sections can close at short notice, so check the park news at uluru.gov.au first. Our Uluru base walk guide covers each section.
The Uluru climb closed permanently on 26 October 2019, and walking around the base is how visitors see the rock today. Some sites are signposted as sensitive and must not be photographed, drones are banned throughout the park, and you should ask before photographing Anangu people. If you plan to use your photos commercially, you need a media permit. For more to do around Yulara, see things to do in Uluru.

"Very good tour and the guides, Dani and Regi, were amazing. They were knowledgeable and friendly, and made sure the tour was prompt so we could visit everywhere with enough time to enjoy ourselves. Thanks for a great tour!"

"We were so happy to see the sunrise view in Uluru, and visit Kata Tjuṯa. If we didn’t join the tour, we would have missed the impressive scenery."
"Nice sunrise trip to see Uluru from a lookout and visit one of the valley of Kata Tjuta. Very kind driver and guide. The transfer was punctual. I got more informations about the wild life, the desert and the animals from the driver than in the zoo. Although I would prefer spend more time in every place we stopped. 30-30 more minutes would be enough. No time to soak up the beauty of the desert."
"Guides were friendly, professional, very informative and helpful. I think if it was a little less expensive more people might go on these tours. sunrise was epic!"
"The tour was very well organised! Our guides, Jim and Hayley, definitely made the trip feel extra special. They both had extensive knowledge about the area and culture. The sunrise lookout over Uluru was spectacular with many different areas to view the rock from. However, you don’t get as close to the rock as you would if you were walking, cycling or on segways. We then travelled to Kata Tjuṯa (the Olga’s) which exceeded our expectations! Within Kata Tjuṯa is Waḻpa Gorge - a breathtaking walk right inside of the rock formations. It is quite rocky and uneven - if you have accessibility issues, or even older like my grandmother, it’s definitely a rolled ankle waiting to happen. We then travelled to this stunning lookout that overlooked both Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa for a wonderful photo opportunity. This tour is definitely worth the money. It is organised, lovely staff and covered Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa at the perfect rate / quality."
"Informative and friendly staff who were professional and caring."

"We absolutely love every bit of it. From pick up, the drive, onboard commentary and hike experience"
"Awesome tour! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable!!!"

For most first visits, AAT Kings' Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta half-day tour. It picks you up from your Ayers Rock Resort hotel, shows you sunrise over Uluru from Talinguru Nyakunytjaku with tea or coffee, then walks into Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta. It costs from $130 per person and is rated 4.6 from 605 reviews. Compare it with other Uluru and Kata Tjuta day tours.
No. With a hire car and a park pass you can drive yourself, since every road in the park is sealed and a 2WD is fine. Yulara has no taxis or public transport, though, so without a car you need a tour or the Hop On Hop Off bus. Rangers also lead a free guided Mala walk. A guide adds the Anangu stories and the driving. See Uluru without a car.
Yes, if you have the time. Kata Tjuta is a group of 36 domes, the tallest rising 546 m above the plain, about 50 km by road from Uluru. Its walks, Walpa Gorge and the Valley of the Winds, take you between the domes, which feels very different from walking around Uluru. A morning tour can cover both. Our Uluru vs Kata Tjuta page compares them.
Yes. The usual plan is sunrise at Uluru, then the drive west to Kata Tjuta for a morning walk, and a sunset tour back at Uluru in the evening. Allow for the 50 km between them and for the heat: in summer, walks should end by 11 am. AAT Kings' sunrise and Kata Tjuta tour covers the morning half. Our Uluru itineraries lay out one, two and three days.
Most leave from Yulara, the resort town about 20 minutes' drive from Uluru, with pickup from the Ayers Rock Resort hotels and campground. Some multi-day tours also collect from Ayers Rock Airport. Day trips and camping tours from Alice Springs pick up from hotels there, but Uluru is 465 km away, about 5.5 hours' drive. See Uluru tours from Yulara for pickup details.
Usually not. Most day tours list the national park pass as excluded, so buy it online before you go or at the entry station. Adults pay A$38 for 3 days or A$50 for a year, and under-18s enter free. Some multi-day tours, such as Autopia's 3-day trip and Adventure Tours Australia's camping tour, include park fees. Check each listing. Full details: park pass and entry fees.
Yes. Uluru is the Anangu name for the rock, and Ayers Rock is the English name. The park was handed back to its Traditional Owners in 1985 and is jointly managed by Anangu and the Australian Government, and it uses the name Uluru. Kata Tjuta was likewise known as the Olgas, with Mount Olga as its tallest dome. You will see both names on tour listings.
Scenic flights need almost no walking: Professional Helicopter Services flies 15, 25 and 36-minute flights, though you must manage steps into the helicopter. Sunset tours with sparkling wine involve a short stroll at the viewing area, and AAT Kings lists its sunset BBQ and star talk as wheelchair accessible. Skip the base walk tours, which cover about 10 km. See Uluru helicopter tours.
AAT Kings lists its sunrise and Kata Tjuta tour as suitable for all ages, and under-18s need no park pass. SEIT small-group tours require car seats for children up to 7, with a fee for infant seats. Multi-day camping trips usually set a minimum age of 8, and the Sounds of Silence dinner takes children from 10. Our things to do in Uluru page has more family ideas.
Yes. Coach tours such as the sunrise and Kata Tjuta morning or the 1.5-hour sunset tour keep walking short and include hotel pickup. Scenic flights suit those who can manage steps into the aircraft. Check limits before booking longer trips: Autopia's 3-day camping tour lists itself as not suitable for people over 75, and the full base walk is 10.6 km. See Uluru sunset tours for gentle options.
Book once your flights are set. Most tours on this site allow free cancellation, often up to 24 hours ahead, though some SEIT tours need 3 days and Autopia's 3-day trip 14 days, so locking in early costs little. If you plan to drive, book the hire car first: cars in Yulara are limited and the park advises booking a few weeks ahead. Read how to get to Uluru.
Coach tours, mostly AAT Kings, travel in an air-conditioned coach and usually cost less. Small-group operators such as SEIT use vehicles for up to 15 people, and its Kata Tjuta sunrise tour caps the group at 11, so you can ask the guide more questions and often get a picnic breakfast. Compare both styles on Uluru sunrise tours.
